Category Rules and Regulations 
Category Descriptions as follows:

Natural Categories
Acceptable styling methods to be used with Natural categories include brushing, combing, shampooing, and conditioning, including the use of beard oils and balms. Any styling method should be used to only accentuate, and must not be used in excess, resulting in an unnatural look. These categories show off the grooming of facial hair naturally in its most basic form.

Styled Categories
Legal styling aids in all Styled categories shall include only wax, hair spray, and other hair products. The use of hair extensions, fake and detached hair, or any form of hair pins or supporting elements is prohibited. Dreadlocked facial hair, due to the constricted state and product-dependent style, should be placed in the relevant Type and Styled (most commonly Freestyle) category.

Natural Moustache: The moustache as it naturally grows, the more natural the better. No closed curls. Only those hairs growing from within 5/8” (1.5 cm) past the end of the upper lip may be grown out. The moustache may be shaped but without aids. No styling aids allowed.

Styled Moustache: A styled moustache is any length of hair grown from above the upper lip and beneath the nose, styled with product. The moustache hairs should be connected up to a maximum of 0.6 inch (1.5 cm) beyond the edge of the upper lip. Styling aids are permitted.

Partial Beard freestyle: Free design and styling of the partial beard. All partial beards that do not qualify for other categories may compete in this category. Styling aids allowed.

Goatee: Goatee as it grows naturally, the more natural the better. Moustache not required. Goatee and moustache can be accentuated but without styling aids. No curled moustaches. There must be a clean shaven section along the ears, at least 1.5" (4 cm, the width of a razor blade) between the onset of the head hair and the beard. No styling aids allowed.

Mutton Chops: Must be a true sideburn, with no natural or shaven gap below the ear. Chin is shaven and hair is optional on the upper lip. No styling aids permitted. Acceptable styling methods include brushing, combing, conditioning, and shampooing.

Whaler: Bushy hair grown along the jaw, chin and lower lip, and optionally on the cheeks. No hair grown on upper lip. No styling aids permitted. Acceptable styling methods include brushing, combing, conditioning, and shampooing.

Fake Beard Realistic: Create the most realistic looking facial hair you can, inspired by any style of facial hair. The more lifelike and convincing, the better. The facial hair style should follow the traditional and realistic appearance and structure of the beard and moustache style being recreated.

Fake Beard Creative: This artistic category is wide-open. Create the most imaginative and fantastic design you can, inspired by any style of facial hair. Creativity in material choice is encouraged.

Full Beard Styled Moustache: 
Beard:
as it grows naturally, the more natural the better. No styling aids allowed in the beard. Moustache: prominent and consisting only of hairs growing from within 5/8” (1.5 cm) past the end of the upper lip. Styling aids allowed only in the moustache.

Scraggly Beard (Under 1”): Full beard as it grows and left natural, under 1” this is for the patchy beards, or the business beards, if you can't grow it long  due to genetics or your career, this category is for you. The more natural the better. The moustache may not be highlighted, and the beard may not be tucked under at the bottom. No styling aids allowed.

Full Beard Natural (Under 4”): Full beard as it grows and left natural, under 4” below the bottom of the lower lip, the more natural the better. The moustache may not be highlighted, and the beard may not be tucked under at the bottom. No styling aids allowed.

Full Beard Natural (4” - 8”): Full beard as it grows and left natural, between 4” and 8” below the bottom of the lower lip, the more natural the better. The moustache may not be highlighted, and the beard may not be tucked under at the bottom. No styling aids allowed.

Full Beard Natural (8" - 12"): Full beard as it grows and left natural, between 8” and 12” below the bottom of the lower lip, the more natural the better. The moustache may not be highlighted, and the beard may not be tucked under at the bottom. No styling aids allowed.

Full Beard Natural (Over 12"): Full beard as it grows and left natural, over 12” below the bottom of the lower lip, the more natural the better. The moustache may not be highlighted, and the beard may not be tucked under at the bottom. No styling aids allowed.

Freestyle: Free design and styling of the beard. All full beards that do not qualify for other categories may compete in this category. Styling aids allowed.
